Brought to the GFT as part of The New Black Film Collective’s Reel Roots selection, this film tells the extraordinary tale of Harriet Tubman's escape from slavery and transformation into one of America's greatest heroes, whose courage, ingenuity, and tenacity freed hundreds of enslaved people and changed the course of history. The African-American activist and abolished is played by British actor Cynthia Evrio who also co-wrote and preformed the film’s original song ‘Stand Up’. Tubman escaped from enslavement and went on to be integral in helping other enslaved people escape through the Underground Railroad. She was also a scout, spy, nurse and guerrilla solider during the Civil War for the Union Army.
