CRER Lunchtime Talks - Two Kings: Empire, Abolition, and Aberdeen

This is a story about two Kings – Thomas King and Nathaniel King – a father and a son. The father rose from enslavement in West Africa to become a missionary and linguist. The son became the first African-born graduate of the University of Aberdeen, almost four centuries after the institution’s founding. The tribulations and triumphs of the King family is an improbable story of slavery, liberation, family reunion, and intellectual achievement in Scotland and early colonial West Africa. Richard Anderson, lecturer in the History of Slavery at the University of Aberdeen, will present the story of the two Kings.
